Compensatory picks give commissioners a flexible tool to add extra draft picks to the board. Different leagues use them in different ways depending on their rules and culture. Here are the most common approaches:
Balance after league changes
When a league expands, contracts, or replaces an owner mid-season, commissioners can use comp picks to help balance the affected teams and keep the league competitive.
Postseason and consolation rewards
Many leagues award comp picks based on postseason results. Winning the consolation bracket, finishing highest among non-playoff teams, or placing in the toilet bowl can earn an extra pick. It keeps eliminated teams competing through the end of the season.
Reward regular-season performance
Some leagues award comp picks to teams that miss the playoffs but finish with strong records, giving them a small advantage heading into the next season without a full lottery system.
Punishment or penalty replacement
Instead of stripping draft picks as a penalty, some commissioners use comp picks on the other side: awarding them to a team that was wronged by a rule violation or unfair circumstance.
Player loss compensation
Award extra picks to teams that lose a player under specific conditions defined by your league. Commissioners decide the criteria and assign the picks accordingly.
